For once I don’t have to wrack my mind to try and recall the recent bird sightings. Courtesy of partaking in the RSPB bird watch over the weekend I have a list:
Not nearly as exciting as I had hoped for – no sign of tree creepers or nuthatch. Willing birds to appear during a designated hour doesn’t seem to work.
Currently open on my desktop is this window:
Eileen Jewell – never heard of her, but may be worth seeking out
The Rumble Strips – again, see above
Diplo – part of Major Lazer so again, may at some point cross my radar.
But let’s extrapolate this. Man (A) has, and likes, music by Pet Shop Boys ergo he may well like Ain’t No Doubt by Jimmy Nail. I do not think so.
Inbetween the incessant cackling of Alan Carr, Dermot O’Leary’s Radio 2 show on Saturday unleashed Adele singing this.
I’d previously discounted her. But even just for the technical grace of her singing and ability to control the phrasing of the song this works.
Devoid of access to Scarlet and Violet – not to mention, access to a regular salary, my purchasing of flowers has gone from the Elton John levels of the past to a positively Sister Wendy like level.
So . . . these were a lovely gift from Liza and Kate.
Of course, being the good practical smallholder in the making, I have great intentions of growing my own flowers to cut. Achieved moderate success with this last year and am hoping for greater focus on this in 2011. The snowdrops that I planted in the autumn are already showing as are bulbs that I never knew existed. It’s a process that can only be undertaken once – moving into a new property in the throes of early summer and having to wait for the following spring to know what, if any, bulbs have been planted. And given that the previous owners seemed to confuse the laying down of decking with gardening proper, I held little hope. So . . . we wait with baited breath, and hope that the chickens (to arrive next week and provisionally named Do, Re and Mi – to allow for expansion of the flock) don’t acquire a taste for the infantile buds of yet to open flowers.
In the harrowing pre-dawn hours this morning a name on my twitter feed leapt out at me. Someone was singing the praises of a collaborative film, shot by Inez and Vinoodh and animated by Jo Ratcliffe. And as if that wasn’t juicy enough, set to an Anthony and the Johnsons track. Jo tells me that Kanye blogged about it, so the view count is through the roof already.
Watch it here.

I hereby resolve to get back to regular postings of bird sightings . . . not that I’ve spotted anything revelationary.
This is a past week kind of list. Much of it in the back garden. My supply of bird food lasted until the thaw so I don’t feel too guilty that the feeders are empty at the moment, but must go and get some more food for them soon . . . and maybe try and persuade them to not eat it at such a rate.
